Red flowers are the best way to attract hummingbirds to your garden. But what kind of flowers are the easiest flowers to keep around, and how do you treat them?
I was amazed when I moved to Texas and saw a hummingbird for the first time. Hummingbirds are native to the Americas and therefore exciting news for people from Europe. Even now six years later I immensely enjoy to eat my breakfast and watch the hummingbirds zoom past the windows from flower to flower.
I threw out my hummingbird feeder last year because there was a lot of wasps and bees on it. (It was something very wrong with the design). It seemed that they scared away the hummingbirds, so they were left with the flowers in my garden. This is the flowers the hummingbirds love in my garden:
The Cape Honeysuckle (Tecomaria capensis) Is drought tolerant and scaringly easy to care for. Will probably outgrow its place if you dont cut it back.
Fire Spikes plant (Odontonema strictum) is a very robust and easy perennial. Glossy leaves. Will need staking. My Hummingbirds loves them! The plant can take some shadow.
Bottlebrush (Callistemon) is an easy shrub to care for. Both Hummingbirds and nectargathering insects loves its brushy flowers. Here in Texas it flowers repeatedly throughout the summer.
Canna is always a hit with Hummingbirds. Canna loves heavy feeding, loads of sun and water.
Jatropha is a lovely shrub who is pretty drought tolerant, needs sun and takes pruning well. Poisonous. Froze completely down in my garden here i Texas, but grew back again within a few months.
Ixora is also popular with the Hummingbirds. Loves full sun, some fertilizer and needs some water, but dont like wet feet. Ixora can be yellow, red or, orange. Pretty deer resistant.
Firebush (Hamelia patens), grows almost wild in my garden, and loves sun and heat. You can cut it back as much as you want.
Powderpuff (Calliandra) start to flower already in January here in my garden in Texas. The shrub has a very sheltered place against my south-facing wall and flowers profoundly throughout spring. Powderpuff starts flowering so early that it provides food for Hummingbirds at a time when there is little flowering food in the garden. The shrub has frozen down for me twice but always sprouts from the root again.
Hibiscus is pretty common here in Texas. Not everybody is aware that the Hibiscus loves slightly acidic soil. Likes moisture, but hates wet feet.
